The Storm at Sea
Fear gripped me. Never had I expected to be caught up in a frightening storm like this one. If I had known the horrific events which lay ahead, I would have never taken a step off the docks onto the terrible stormy sea. Dark thunder clouds swarmed me. I could see the cloud cover the dark chilling sky. In seconds everything was swallowed by the darkness and it was like the world was pitch black. Suddenly I saw a distance light coming from my right: it was a nearby lighthouse. Suddenly something else lit up the sky. It was lightning and in seconds it was everywhere BANG! The lightning had hit something and it was edging closer and closer to me. My body started to tremble. It was nearly upon me. I thought I was going to die.

The Storm at Sea
I was lucky to have survived that vicious storm. The rain was falling like bullets, there was no escape! As my life flashed before my eyes, lightning sliced the water. Never in my whole life had I thought I would be caught in a deadly storm like this. All I could see was relentless rain.
Beneath me, I saw an old rusty boat; it was fighting against the sea, just about withstanding the waves swishing from one side to another. I was heading to the top of the boat when lightning tore through the sky, hitting the boat with a massive ‘CRASH’ followed by a ‘GLUG, GLUG, GLUG’ as the boat sank beneath the waves. It groaned as if calling for help. Then all of a sudden, lightning struck me on my wing and I fell into the dark, blue, scary sea.
All I could think about was home; I knew I had to stay alive, to see my eggs hatch and teach my little ones how to fly. Then in the distance I saw a lighthouse; it was shining brightly like a star caught in a glass case. It was so high, it looked like a star in space. I could sense freedom coming my way. I could taste the salty sea water, balancing on the top of my lip.

The Savannah
The Maasai Mara is located in Kenya where the climate is very hot and there is not that much rain. The climate in Kenya is very hot because Kenya is quite near the equator, but they do have monsoon season which helps the plants to grow and fills the watering holes.
The Savannah is a rolling grassland plain which reaches out for miles across the Maasai Mara. It’s full of plants and animals! The Savannah is a very dry place and will look very bare at stages. Sometimes there are fires which cause animals to migrate from their homes. However, regular fires prevent trees from establishing and savannahs from turning into forests.
Most savannah grass is coarse and grows in patches with areas of bare ground. You won’t see many trees in the
savannah because of little rainfall. The Acacia tree and Elephant grass are common in the Savannah.
The Maasai Mara is home to lots of amazing animals including lions, buffalo,
wildebeest, cheetahs, leopards, gazelles, wild dogs, ostriches, giraffes, elephants, zebras, rhinos, camels, hippos, snakes etc. The Savannah is home to the largest land animal in the world: the African Elephant.
It is also full of loads of plants like grasses such as Rhodes grass, red oats grass, Star grass, Lemon grass and some shrubs.
Some extra facts include a really sad thing: the white rhino is almost extinct. There is only one white rhino left in the world and people are
trying to make another one by merging the one white rhino with a normal grey- coloured rhino to make a baby white rhino.

The Maasai Mara Savannah in Kenya Where is Kenya?
Kenya is in Eastern Africa. Its neighbouring countries are Uganda, Ethiopia, Tanzania, South Sudan, and Somalia.
It is located in the southern hemisphere and lies just south of the Equator and east of the Prime Meridian. It has a population of about 54 million people and its capital city is Nairobi.
The Indian Ocean is its coast to the east and its longest river is Tana which is 1,000 km long. The tallest mountain is Mt Kenya, which is 5,199m high.
There is a deep valley called the Rift Valley in the northwest where there are large areas of farmland and cocoa and coffee plantations.
Characteristics of the Savannah
The Maasai Mara Savannah is close to the equator. It is a dry, hot and dusty plain and mostly grassy and sandy.
What is the climate?
Sometimes it can have long periods of rain. In the summer season it is very hot and humid. In the rainy season it remains humid but cools in the evening.
Animals
There are large number of animals in the savannah including zebra, wildebeest, elephants, giraffes, ostriches, gazelles, buffalo, lions, hyaenas, cheetahs, leopards, black mamba snakes and wild
dogs. Most animals are herbivores.
Plants
There are grasses including Lemon, Rhodes, Star and Bermuda. Lots of these plants store water in their roots, bulbs, or trunks.
