39CREATIVE WRITING YEAR 6The Actors%u2019 RehearsalFor the feast at Duke Theseus%u2019 and Queen Hippolyta%u2019s wedding, they needed some entertainment and so Mistress Quince wrote a play called %u2018Pyramus and Thisbe%u2019. Mistress Quince assembled a few amateur actors to perform at the play she had written for the wedding. Bottom, who was very full of himself, started telling Mistress Quince to call out their names and parts. She started with Bottom, the weaver, who is playing Pyramus. Asked if Pyramus is a lover or a tyrant, Mistress Quince answered saying that he is a lover. Then she moved onto Francis Flute, who is Thisbe, but he didn%u2019t want to take the part because Thisbe is a girl and he has a beard growing. Seeing an opportunity, Bottom asked if he could wear a mask and play Thisbe as well. After all of this, Robin Starveling was told that she was Moonlight. Next, Snout the tinker, was the wall. Finally, Mistress Quince told everybody that she was the narrator and Snug, the joiner, would be the lion. Bottom, being himself, asked if he could play the lion and roar so loudly that the Duke Theseus would ask him to roar again. Snug requested to have the scripts given out now since she was slow at learning. Mistress Quince, therefore, handed out all the scripts to the actors. After they had looked at the scripts, Mistress Quince told them to meet at the forest the following night. Oberon%u2019s revengeFlying around the forest, Puck discovers the group of actors he has already met. The Leader, Quince, suggests a large area of overgrown bushes and says grass is perfect for the rehearsal. Puck has a big urge to cause mischief.Bottom steps to one side and performs his lines. %u201cO Thisbe!%u201d Once he finishes, he goes off stage to wait for his cue. Quince calls Flute up to speak but, as soon as he opens his mouth, he rushes all his lines and it is over in a blink. Whilst Flute speaks, Puck causes mischief. Bottom does not come out on his cue so the others are confused. When he does appear, everybody GASPS and, after they all explain to Bottom that he has changed, they all run away. Puck finds it hysterical. Bottom starts singing as he enters the forest path. Bottom comes to a stop when he seems Titania but doesn%u2019t realise he woke her up. Titania%u2019s eyes gracefully open and she instantly falls in love with Bottom. She promises to love him forever. Bottom is oblivious to what is happening and Titania says they should go to find her fairies. Puck is giggling and Oberon arrives to see what has happened. Puck tells Oberon what has taken place between Titania and Bottom. Demetrius and Hermia approach in an argument. Hermia is trying to find out where Lysander is but Demetrius won%u2019t tell her %u2013 all he says is that he is alive. Hermia is furious and leaves. Puck realises he has put the flower on the wrong Athenian. Oberon is irate and tells Puck to fetch Helena. Puck explains that he will go swifter than ever before. Wedding time! The four lovers wake up in the woods on the day of Theseus%u2019s wedding. Thanks to the magic flower, Lysander sees Hermia and falls in love with her all over again. Demetrius finally loved Helena and everybody was happy!Soon after they are joined by Theseus, Hippolyta and Hermia%u2019s father, Egeus. Egeus is furious and calls for Lysander to be penalised very badly for attempting to elope with his daughter. However, Theseus invites both couples to come and get married with him. After they are married, Mistress Quince and friends perform their play about Pyramus and Thisbe to the very happy wedding guests. Puck then has his final say, making his well-known apology. %u201cIf we shadows have offended, think but this and all is mended: that you have but slumbered here while these visions did appear.%u201d
